The essential question I chose to guide my artwork this year was: How can I tell a story through art? Originally, I chose this question because I wanted to focus on portraiture because I was inspired by Ashley Longshore, but after visiting the Newcomb Art Museum I decided to focus my question and find a way to tell my story. I was inspired by the artist BMike and his attempt to paint positive images of black people. As we learned in history, media was often used as a tool to dehumanize black people by making them seem aggressive or stupid, but African Americans fought back against those negative images by creating positive ones. The way BMike chose to create positive images of black people through his color scheme and narrative inspired me to tell my own story by creating positive images of important people in my life.
